You need to go into the edit menu in Hypershade, select duplicate, and then select shading network. Ctrl + D doesn’t duplicate a material node. Simple, right? Well, not if you’re not already familiar with the interface. Last night was a prime example: working in the Hypershade toolbox, he duplicates a shader node to make a new material with a keyboard shortcut. There are also more than a few instances where he just goes on like he’s talking to no one but himself and doesn’t consider the possibility that he is supposed to be teaching. When he uses it again, he blitzkriegs on through with what he’s doing without referencing the keyboard shortcut or whatever he uses to access it. Very often, he will mention a technique, and not reference it for ten lessons. I intend to persevere through this course, and even go through others he teaches, but only because I’m not leaving my wingman! Seriously, he is the instructor on the bulk of the Maya courses for Digital Tutors, and the thought of continuing on with this course with him has me dreading it. The instructor for this Introduction to Maya 2014 course, Justin Marshall, is just not my cup of tea. I am looking into other sources to supplement my Maya education, as well. I will be moving on to procedural textures and UVs in my next session. The material editor, which goes by the name of Hypershade, was easy enough to navigate, but it felt a bit cramped compared to the node-based editors in 3ds Max and Substance Designer 3. I began working with Maya’s materials last night, and while I didn’t have as much time as I had planned to work on it, I did get a basic material on everything.
